Snowshoe and Shooting, January 4th 2025

Nine club members and one guest joined me as I 'led' my first NVOC event: a snowshoe and an introductory biathlon shooting lesson at the Whistler Olympic Centre on Saturday, Jan 4. Our guest was Michele and Craig’s 15 year old exchange student from Germany, Liana, visiting Canada for the first time and out for her first snowshoe ever!

The group decided to tackle the intermediate ‘Ski Jump Climb’ trail to start. A packed powder route that went up, up, up - with lots of deep, untouched snow on either side of the trail that Rob, Maya, Liana, Pete and Craig could not resist stomping through.

After an energetic and slightly rushed snowshoe over to the Olympic shooting range, we met with our instructors who went over the basics and safety of the range and rifles. Then it was time to show off our marksmanship!

Putting .22 calibre biathlon rifles into the hands of NVOC members at the Olympic shooting range was a fun, unique, and for most of us, first-time experience. Big fluffy snowflakes fell as we took turns loading, aiming, firing. Liana was our group's best shot, the only one who hit 5/5 targets during one of her rounds.

Thanks to all that joined, to Rob/Sheila and Pete for driving. Sheila's assistance with logistics was most appreciated.

Maybe next year we can combine a x-country ski and shooting lesson - for a real biathlon experience!
