Chadsey Lake 4th January 2025

Honey Mushrooms by Louise

Seven ambitious hikers headed out to Abbotsford to explore Chadsey Lake. None of us had ever hiked to Chadsey Lake before and were eager to explore the trail.

The trail begins on Sumas Mountain Road (lots of parking) where the trail is narrow with lots of twists and turns, descending to Wades Creek. After crossing the bridge, the steep climb begins up to Chadsey Lake. The forest is dense and damp with lots of furry trees following a narrow but well-trodden path.

We followed the Centennial Trail, which offered several views over the Fraser River although the weather was cloudy.

There was a dusting of snow on the lakeshore while the middle of the lake was frozen. After a quick lunch we decided to see if we could hike around the lake. We navigated around the lake, however, there were a lot of blowdowns and rocks to climb over but it was well worth the effort.   We stumbled upon a beautiful display of Honey Mushrooms cascading down the slope towards the lakeshore.

This would be a wonderful hike in the summer as the trail continues to Sumas Mountain adding 6+kms to the round trip. Summer also opens up the possibility of a swim in the lake on the way down (or up) the mountain. Abbotsford is also home to the Sikh Heritage Museum, time did not permit a visit on this trip but maybe in the summer.
