Kennedy Falls - May 6, 2023
Sadly due to the weather, Flatiron was cancelled for a 2nd time. Plan B’s destination was Kennedy Falls.
Nine eager hikers met at the top of Mountain Highway and headed off to the Falls on an overcast Saturday morning. The trail was undulating and muddy with a lot of roots, and numerous creek crossings.
The trail passes by the Big Cedar, a popular landmark and one of the largest remaining old growth trees in Lynn Valley Regional Park.
One of the few technical sections of the trail required us to scramble down and then back up using chains.
Just before we summited the trail for a view of the waterfall, you could see possible bear activity down the valley. Bushes were moving, and undergrowth was disturbed where bears had dug for roots and grubs.
The waterfall was amazing, rushing and roaring, spraying us with cool mountain mist. After lunch we headed back to the parking lot. Fortunately, the weather was not as bad as had been forecast and we had the occasional sunny period. A great hike indeed!
