Fat Dog and Sasquatch Tracks
What an amazing day! Eleven of us left the city bright and early Saturday morning and were rewarded with a spectacular sunrise. The further west we drove the better the weather with clear sunny skies although the temperature gauge read – 7C. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at Cambie Creek parking area as it had recently been ploughed.
After a quick debate we decided to leave our snowshoes behind and just use spikes. We left the parking lot just before 9:30am and kept a steady pace climbing up hill through the forest until we came upon alpine meadow. We dropped our packs and headed a little further up the trail. The view from the meadow was picturesque with rugged mountains including the Three Brothers to the northeast and Frosty Mountain to the south.
We hunkered down for lunch layering up with our backs to the wind, we didn’t hang around too long as the mountain air was crisp with blowing snow. Leaving the meadow behind we steadily made our way back down the trail, running into several backcountry skiers and snowboarders coming from Burnt Knoll. After a brief stop at the Cambie Loop Fat Dog trail sign we enjoyed a shot of Carolans before heading to the parking lot.
In hindsight, snowshoes would have been better for the upper part of the trail, although the trail was packed down from skiers. It was a long, challenging and rewarding day for all of us.
