Around Van City Bike Ride

Ride Leader, Perry; Words by Stella

Around Van City Bike Ride, with the forecasted sunshine and a high’s around 10 degrees, went ahead on Sunday March 6th.   Seven riders started in Norgate, with an eighth joining downtown, a couple riders experiencing trails for the first time. It all began just after 10 am, with the wake-up steady climb over the Lions Gate Bridge, through Stanley Park, then along the bay and the ‘barge on the beach’, before crossing over the Burrard St Cycleway. Next saw the group touring along the Kitsilano stretch, before a short stop at Jericho Beach Park to take in the views. No one could avoid the next challenge of the rather steep and strenuous uphill dirt track to Salish trail, with only low geared Danny staying on the seat, the rest walking their bikes much of the way. The long ride through the trails of Pacific Spirit Park was cooling and beautiful, triggering layers going back on (whilst successfully dodging a few dogs). The route then flowed to the north shore of the Fraser River, with views out to the estuary and the airport tower. This approximate half way point was an ideal spot to rest and get out healthy packed lunches + chocolate. The return ride was more efficient along the paved Arbutus Trail with only a brief delay to wait on one wayward rider too easily distracted by the sights. The seasoned members encouraged the rest to accomplish a quick ride home, navigating through the busyness along English Bay. Tom’s slight detour via Beaver Lake avoided part of the Stanley Park causeway.  The last stretch was an exciting ride back down the Lions Gate Bridge at a good speed; then returning the way we’d come along the Spirit Trail.

The total ride was 49.3 km. Congratulations to Danny, Tom, Perry, Hiroshi, Carol, Martina, Roberta, and Stella.  Perry’s invitation to host a wine and cheese afterwards was much appreciated!
