Trip report for Norvan Falls, 18 km return January 15 2022
Eighteen hikers gathered at the Rice Lake parking lot, raring to go and delighted that…“It’s not raining!”. Despite the milder temperatures the trail to Norvan Falls was still almost completely covered in packed wet snow and ice, so our microspikes made the going much easier. It was overcast on the way to the debris chute, but the nearby Lynn Creek made for pretty walking. We definitely were not alone on the trail, passing and being passed by plenty of other hikers and dog walkers. These thinned out somewhat after the chute, but we were still surprised at how many of the other hikers were slip sliding their way along in running shoes and other unlikely and unspikey footwear. There were a lot of little ups and downs on the second half of the trail as we crossed little streams that were clear of snow and ice. Unfortunately, the falls, while still impressive, were also clear of ice due to the mild weather. As we found lunch spots among the many other hikers, the sky began to clear and we got some nice photos. The return walk offered some beautiful views of sun slanting through the trees and the clouds parting to reveal the surrounding peaks. All in all, it was a lovely day: Christmas chocolate was re distributed; we were all happy to welcome Kate, a new member; and it did not rain!
