Samuel Plimsoll 200th Anniversary Hike - Munro Lake February 10th 2024

Eleven of us met at the trailhead to Munro Lake, none of us had been there before. The first four kms was straight up in a butt burning climb through old growth forest with furry trees, before the route levelled out on the approach to the lake. We didn’t see any ice until very close to the lake, the trail looked more like a fall trail than a winter trail. Four of us put spikes on for the lake approach. We found a nice lunch spot by the lake and celebrated two birthdays with Martina’s home made brownies and candles. Lemon cookies provided by Gerd definitely merit an honorary mention as do Tamsin’s Jelly Babies, enough for everyone…. this time. On the way up we had pretty good views from time to time, including from the lookout rock which allowed us to see Surrey and the Port Mann Bridge. Mainly though it was views of trees.
Heading back down there was a lot of banter and discussion including book recommendations, listed below. We then were reminded that it was the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Samuel Plimsoll - developer of the Plimsoll Line which shows that ships are not overloaded and it is still helping to keep sailors safe today.
The descent was tough on our knees and we were glad to be back at the cars.
